Polysaccharides composition of the tropical brown seaweeds Turbinaria turbinata, Sargassum filipendula, Dictyota caribaea and Padina perindusiata collected at Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) was determined in this study. Crude fucoidan extracted with HCl and alginate extracted with a hot alkali solution were characterized in terms of their molecular weight, sulfate content, uronic acid, total carbohydrate and neutral sugar components. Low molecular weight sulfated‐fucoidan was the major component in all species studied. Fucoidan from T. turbinata and from D. caribaea were characterized as a homofucan, with fucose as the neutral sugar. Fucoidan from S. filipendula was composed of a galactofucan, and fucoidan from P. perindusiata was characterized as a heterofucan consisting of fucose, glucose and galactose. The Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectra of fucoidan extracted from species studied indicated that the majority of sulfate groups are located at C‐4 and to a lesser extent at C‐2 and/or C‐3 of the fucopyranose residues. This could be advantageous since several therapeutic effects have been reported for fucoidans with similar characteristics. FT‐IR spectra from D. caribaea and P. perindusiata revealed the presence of O‐acetyl groups in crude fucoidan, which could be potentially utilized as an immune stimulant. Molecular weight of alginate varied between 595 and 1301 kDa with similar uronic acid content in all species. Alginate M : G ratio inferred from FT‐IR spectra suggests a high content of G‐block in all species. Potential applications of these polysaccharides are discussed.

This study deals with two range-extending brown algae from Tahitian coral reefs, Sargassum mangarevense and Turbinaria ornata; their alginate properties, mannitol and phenolic contents, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were determined. Turbinaria ornata showed the richest alginate content with the highest extraction yield (19.2 ± 1.3% dw). Their alginates also exhibited the
highest viscosity (50 ± 18 mPa.s), but the M:G ratios (mannuronic acid to glucuronic acid) of alginates (1.25–1.42) were similar
in both species. Alginate yield displayed spatial variations, but no significant seasonal changes. The highest mannitol content
was found in S. mangarevense (12.2 ± 2.1% dw) during the austral winter. With respect to other tropical Fucales, both algae exhibited also a high phenolic
content (2.45–2.85% dw) with significant spatio-temporal variations. Furthermore, high antioxidant activity and activity against
Staphylococcus aureus were also detected in extracts. According to these preliminary results, these two range-extending algae are of key interest
in numerous industrial areas.

Turbinaria foliosasp. nov. is described on the basis of several collections made from Dhofar, Sultanate of Oman. The new species is known only from southern Oman, a region of the northern Arabian Sea that is strongly impacted by the upwelling from the summertime monsoon. It is distinguished from other species of the genus by the shape of the leaves and by their loose, non‐congested arrangement. Air vesicles, embedded in the leaves, may be present, but more often are absent. A census of the currently recognized species in the genus Turbinaria is provided. Reference is made to Sargassum turbinarioides and Sargassum turbinati‐folium. These species possess discrete blades and spherical vesicles and thus conform to Sargassum.

This paper focuses on the invasion by Turbinaria ornata (a brown algae) in the Tuamotu archipelago, French Polynesia [(5–35°S)/(200–230°E)]. Prior to 1980, this alga existed only in the Society and Austral archipelagoes. Between 1985 and 1990, it began to appear in the southern and northern parts of the Tuamotu archipelago. Genetic analyses have been shown not to be appropriate in determining the origin of this algae population. This study investigated the possible ocean drift of floating aggregates of algae. Ocean currents were calculated from satellite data from 1993 to 2001. Their spatial variations as well as their seasonal and interannual variations are described along with calculated drift trajectories. While it was found that mean currents cannot directly transport algae from the Society and Austral archipelagoes to the Tuamotu, the large interannual changes during the El Niño-Southern Oscillation phenomenon produce current reversals that are strong enough to create a transport pathway in a short enough time to allow their survival.

The heat shock protein Hsp60 exhibited marked oscillation during a 12-hour day period when the coral Turbinaria reniformis was maintained in the laboratory under constant conditions of light (200 μE) and temperature (27 °C). A biphasic pattern of Hsp60 was apparent, punctuated by a low protein level at the midpoint of the 12-hour day period. Oscillation of Hsp60 was also apparent when coral was kept in darkness in lieu of a scheduled light period. The pattern of Hsp60 was altered when coral was exposed to increased light intensity (400 μE) or temperature elevation (32 °C). These observations suggest that Hsp60 in coral exhibits oscillation that is altered by increased light and temperature elevation.

The present study aims to focus on the bioprospecting of marine macroalgae of Turbinaria species, plenteous biomass of the world ocean. Three types of solvents, i.e., H2O, MeOH/H2O (80:20, v/v) and hexane/i‐PrOH (50:50, v/v), were used for extraction. Both the biological activity and the pattern of present chemicals were characterized. For the cell proliferation assay, the human embryonic kidney 293 cells, cervix/breast/pancreatic adenocarcinoma, and osteosarcoma cells were used. For the antioxidant activity determination, both intracellular assay with human embryonic kidney and cervix adenocarcinoma cells, as well as the biochemical DPPH test, were employed. To complete the information about macroalgae composition, organic compounds were characterized by the liquid chromatography coupled with high resolution tandem mass spectrometry. Attention was concentrated mainly on the lipidomic profile characterization. In spite the fact that any significant antiproliferative effect was not observed for cancer cells, both the Turbinaria species were shown to be good protectors against the oxidative stress of the non‐cancer cells. Most of the antioxidants were determined in the hexane/i‐PrOH extract. As regards the lipids identified, most of them belonged to the triacylglycerols followed by sphingomyelins, diacylglycerols, and polar (lyso)phospholipids. Additionally to fatty acids with 14, 16 and 18 carbons, also those with odd carbon numbers were frequently present.

An unusual sulfated fucan-like polysaccharidecontaining aminosugar constituent was isolated fromthe brown Fucales, Turbinaria ornata. Itsantiproliferative effect on asynchronous cells of ahuman non-small-cell bronchopulmonary carcinoma line(NSCLC-N6) was studied in vitro. The kinetics ofcell growth further to the continuous exposure ofcells to T. ornata extract was investigated andthe changes in the cell cycle were observed usingflow-cytometry. Cell growth appeared to be inhibitedin the G1 phase. Altogether our observations suggesta triggering of the terminal differentiation ofcancerous cells by this fucan-like polysaccharide.
